YouTube generates thumbnails differently depending on how a video was uploaded, so not every size exists for every video.
These three sizes are auto-generated for almost every public video, going back to YouTube's earliest uploads, so they're the most reliable fallback when a higher resolution isn't available.
The 1280×720 maxresdefault image is only generated for videos uploaded at 720p or higher. Older or low-resolution uploads simply don't have one — the tool hides it automatically instead of showing a broken image.
Thumbnail images live at a predictable, public img.youtube.com address. This tool builds that address directly from the video ID, so it works even when the shared API quota is busy.
